The NextGen Biofuels Fund supports the establishment of first-of-kind large demonstration-scale facilities for the production of next-generation renewable fuels.

The intake for the following funding opportunity is now closed.

The Next Generation Biofuels Fund (NGBF) is in its wind-down phase. As a result, the NGBF is now focused on construction-ready projects that have successfully progressed through pre-construction planning in accordance with the NGBF Project Assurance Program (PAP). Based on the remaining program time, new applicants would not be able to complete required phases of project development, construction, plant commissioning and start-up for commercial operation. For this reason, NGBF will not be accepting new applications.

What is it all about?

The NextGen Biofuels Fund™ is designed to support the market entry of next-generation renewable fuels and co-products, in near full or full-scale production plants, that require high capital expenditure (high CAPEX) to support their larger demonstration-scale activities. Our aim is to increase each project’s chances of successfully making it to the marketplace, and help Canadian entrepreneurs carry out their innovation efforts within Canada. We support only the most innovative technologies; those with the potential to meet market demand and to achieve Canada’s environmental and economic goals in priority areas.

Every cleantech project considered for SDTC funding is subject to a multi-phased application process that includes stringent due diligence -- we must ensure funds are invested wisely on behalf of Canadians. Our process combines the same attention to technology and market aspects of due diligence as that of the private sector, with an additional layer of appraisal that examines broad public environmental, economic and health benefits.
